Rep. Allen Boyd (D-Fla.) on House Health Bill

“I cannot support this bill in the version it is in now. We can do better. We can make it better.” — to a crowd in Cross City, Florida, holding a copy of the House bill passed by the Energy and Commerce Committee (August 17, 2009, CNN News)

Ms. Higgins quote of Rep. Boyd is accurate, but the context would put a different spin on what he actually advocates. Congressman Boyd was "grandstanding" when he held up the 1,200 pg legislation; saying he would not vote for THAT (HR3200) bill. He DID get an applause, but went on to stipulate what criteria was needed to gain his support. There were to be 4 provisions : 1) You can keep a current plan that was satisfying, 2) It would need to be revenue neutral, 3) It must be universal (Forced upon all), and 4) ??? (I forgot # 4). Those attending didn't want the Federal govt involved in their health care decisions, period. Can they be blamed (Amtrak, Post Office, etc)? Must they be forced into an unwanted Federal system? You can't have the Fed be a competitor and the referee. The Federal mandates will eventually drive private providers out (They could not cover losses by taxing or counterfeiting money). So, Rep. Boyd and his "Blue Dog" Democrats will offer this as a stepping stone to the eventual Govt. Plan. The Republicans are crafting just such a compromise, too, with a "Cooperative" plan as the intermediary step to total govt. takeover. Let's pray that the people are not seduced by these tactics.
